MOT tests can be carried out on your car up to one month prior to the expiry date of an existing MOT certificate. You are required by law to keep your car in a roadworthy condition if you use the car on the road. An MOT test checks that the vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. If your car is more than 3 years old, you are required to do a MOT each year. Without a valid MOT, your car insurance and road tax gets invalidated.
